MAZES AND LABYRINTHS
We see an incredible therapeutic potential in our designs of mazes and labyrinths (particularly for the non-sighted). The former with their many cul-de-sacs are intellectually enhancing left brain puzzles, whereas labyrinths are tools for the right hemisphere of the brain, that improve creativity, intuition and spiritual awareness (hence their inclusion in cathedral architecture). Monks used to dance around the paths in order to attain a higher level of consciousness similar to that of the Sufi whirling dervishes.
These images are very popular with young children, who love to trace the paths with their toys; consequently, they are seen as an educationally beneficial addition to nurseries/kindergartens.
