A RUNNER COMMISSIONED FOR A HAMPSTEAD PROPERTY.
This runner runs the length of the corridor and opens out into a reception area. There is an entrance to four rooms from the corridor and four more rooms from the reception area. An imposed restriction being that two of the doors had to open outwards into the corridor. We felt that a predominantly curvilinear design would complement the rectilinear corridor, making use of the compulsory arcs from the two out swinging doors to set up an alternating rhythmic sweep of curves from door to door – giving the visitor an impression of being able to meander down a walkway, taking things in (details of paintings etc) as opposed to feeling like a projectile hurtling down a tube. The shapes being segments imply the continuation of huge circles beyond the walls thereby creating the illusion of a more expansive area to an otherwise confined space.
For the colour scheme – we matched colours from the existing carpets in the adjoining rooms.
