Douglas & Dudley felt that they should now move their work outside to the streets. Their motivation came from a dramatic visual experience they had when students at Bradford. This coincided with the earliest Pakistani immigrants who (having come to the dark murky mills from such a colourful world) opted for painting the doors of their terraced houses in unusual colour combinations. “To us, they shone like diamonds in a coal mine. Unfortunately over the years their colour schemes have become as dull and conservative as ours. No doubt the politicians would be pleased to see how they have assimilated our culture. We however were doing our best to assimilate theirs, for we too (like many of the Graffiti artists of today) wished to make our streets more colourful and joyous.”
